The anti-gay laws are remnants from the British colonial rule and Ghana remains one of 35 Commonwealth countries maintaining the laws criminalizing sexual intimacy between same sexes.
In November, 2017 an interview with Al Jazeera with the President of Ghana saw Nana Akuffo Addo making a submission that, decriminalization of homosexuality could happen in Ghana with increased advocacy from pressure groups.
He noted at the time that, even the Britain had moved beyond the laws of criminalizing same-sex relations. Nana Akuffo Addo continued that he and his government had no plans of introducing legislation on same-sex marriage.
However, the ambiguity of those comments was met with controversies from religious groups and anti-gay activists, prompting for a more definite response from the President.
