Jack Grealish has once again been left out of England’s squad for the upcoming Nation’s League games against Iceland and Denmark.
This decision, according to former Aston Villa ace Lee Hendrie was a ‘personal’ one. Hendrie said he and manager Gareth Southgate didn’t see eye-to-eye during their spell together at Villa Park.
Jack Grealish was expected to earn his first cap after having a stellar season with Aston Villa, scoring ten goals and providing six assists in the process, leading his club to Premier League safety.
But Grealish was surprisingly left out of the by the Three Lions Boss and instead picked uncapped Phil Foden and Kalvin Philips. Southgate stated his reason for the decision being a strong competition for places with Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood.
This statement however, Hendrie believes was influenced by Grealish’s attitude and not his ability on the pitch. Speaking to talkPORT host Jim White on Wednesday, the former Villa player revealed he often clashed with Southgate in the dressing room over his ‘Jack the Lad’ attitude and this is quite the very same case with Grealish
In his statements , Hendrie said ” Villa didn’t have a great season by any account but Jack was able to mostly keep them up by himself this was this time to get in”.
” Listen, I’ve been in the changing room with Gareth and we clashed really bad because I was a Jack the Lad and he was obviously Mr. Professional- that’s why he’s England manager and I’m sitting here on the phone to you guys!
“ I just feel there might be something a little bit personal; whether it’s Grealish’s Jack attitude, his past, certain circumstances that have gone on over the COVID-19 thing where he got caught out…..
Gabby Abgonlahor a former Villa striker also stated in a radio interview that Jack had performed far above all those guys selected into the team and didn’t understand why he was being left out this time again.
Hendrie went on to say the England manager’s decision might have been based only on what he’s read and seen on the field and said Jack would be gutted about being left out of the team.
