Barcelona star Lionel Messi has just this week activated a clause in his contract that could allow him to leave the Catalan giants without having to pay a transfer fee.
This season has been one of the worse in recent years for the Catalan giants where they ended their season’s campaign trophiless both domestically and in Europe as well. Barca performed so woefully across board under Manager Quique Setien who was finally sacked by the Blaugrana with the icing on the cake being an 8-2 drubbing at the hands of eventual winners Bayern Munich in the semi finals of the Champions league.
Ronald Koeman was then appointed new manager who instantly begun a total overhaul of the team by directly telling five senior players of the team their services were no longer required. These players were Luis Suarez, Ivan Rakitic, Arturo Vidal among other two top players.
He further went on to tell Messi he wasn’t going to be given the preferential treatment he had been receiving all these years from the team and that he would have to fight for his place there.
This statement alongside a possibility of new and exciting prospects has caused Messi to trigger a clause in his contract that allows him to leave at the end of the season.
Barcelona management are saying he cannot activate he cannot do that since that period officially passed in June after the season was supposed to be officially over. But with the obvious case of the corona pandemic, Messi’s agent say they can try and talk their way out of it.
Whatever the case shall be, the fanbase would sure hate to see their cult hero leave after so many glorious years with them.
