Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie has been appointed Chair of the newly constituted 11-member Board of the Council for Legal Education and Training (CLET). The appointment forms part of ongoing efforts to improve legal education and professional training across Ghana.
The board draws together experienced judicial figures, government officials, and academics. Its role is to guide and supervise important areas of legal education and training in the country.
Other members of the judiciary on the board include Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, Court of Appeal Justice Jennifer Abena Dadzie, and Circuit Court Judge Siran Mahama.
Government representation comes from Deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Dr Justice Srem-Sai, and Deputy Education Minister Dr Clement Abas Apaak. Prof Augustine Ocloo, Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), is also a member.
From the academic side, the board includes Prof Kofi Abotsi (Dean of the UPSA Law School), Prof Peter Atudiwe Atupare (Dean of the University of Ghana School of Law), Prof Cynthia Forson (Deputy Provost of Lancaster University), and Prof Raymond Atuguba (Director-General for Legal Education).
CLET oversees legal education and professional legal training in Ghana. This includes managing the Ghana School of Law and carrying out related regulatory duties.
The formation of the new board coincides with wider reforms in the sector, following the enactment of the Legal Education Act. That law sets out the structure and rules for organising and regulating legal education and professional training.
