Minority Leader and Effutu MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin has filed lawsuits against Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi, accusing him of making false and defamatory remarks.
The announcement came on Monday, August 24, 2026, as Parliament resumed sitting. It stems from a public clash between the two men over questions surrounding GoldBod’s activities and the Bank of Ghana’s reported losses under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP).
Tensions rose after Gyamfi labelled Afenyo-Markin an “extortionist” in reaction to the Minority Leader’s calls for accountability regarding the US$1.7 billion loss the central bank recorded in 2025 under the gold-buying scheme.
Afenyo-Markin stated that he has begun legal proceedings against Gyamfi as well as media outlets that carried the disputed statements.
He specified two suits: one at the Accra High Court (Suit Number GT/1029/2026) against Samuel Adu Gyamfi and Multimedia Group Limited, and another at the Achimota Circuit Court (Suit Number GR/ACH/CC/C5/02/2026) against Eric Adjei and Peace FM.
He voiced confidence that the judiciary would decide the case on the basis of the evidence and the law, adding that the courts would in due course reach the proper conclusion.
The lawsuits follow weeks of back-and-forth public statements between the Minority Leader and the GoldBod CEO concerning the DGPP’s financial results and how much the programme contributed to the reported losses.
Afenyo-Markin has consistently pressed the government and GoldBod for answers, while Gyamfi has denied that GoldBod itself suffered the losses. Gyamfi has also indicated that he will defend the remarks he made about Afenyo-Markin in court.
