Assembly Member Edmond Kusi Yeboah of the Twumkrom Electoral Area has voiced concern over the growing destruction of farmlands by stray cattle and pigs, describing the problem as a canker that has left local farmers frustrated.
Yeboah said farmers have repeatedly complained about crop damage. Efforts to contact the owners of the animals have produced little progress, he said. The issue was reported to the Environmental Health Office, which engaged pig farmers, but no concrete steps have been taken to resolve it.
The situation has reached a standstill, forcing farmers to continue absorbing the losses, Yeboah said. He suggested stronger measures, including the shooting of stray livestock, may be needed, though he noted that such action would require a court order for legal authority.
Yeboah also highlighted shortages of furniture and inadequate classroom facilities affecting schools in his electoral area.
At Abonsrakrom, a Basic Education Certificate Examination center, a lack of furniture is affecting candidates during the exams, he said. At Dwaho M/A Basic School, pupils still study in an aging mud classroom block built by the community.
An nongovernmental organization once showed interest in constructing a junior high school block there, acquired land and began excavation, but later left the country without finishing the project.
Both the municipal chief executive and the member of Parliament have visited the site, yet no further progress has been made, Yeboah said.
In Koradaso, junior high school students must use primary school classrooms, prompting teachers to combine some primary classes to free space. The community has already built a structure but needs additional support to make it suitable for teaching and learning, he said.
Yeboah appealed to the government, philanthropists and other individuals to assist the affected communities.
