Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has pledged support to the newly installed Majority Leader, James Agalga, while making clear that his core mission remains converting the Minority Caucus into the parliamentary majority.
Addressing the House on Thursday, August 27, after Agalga formally took up the Majority Leader role, Afenyo-Markin said he would not stand in his counterpart’s way. Instead, he would offer an alternative viewpoint on government business.
“I am saying that you can find in me a friend. My job is not to obstruct you. My job is to offer a different lens to things you may not see,” he stated.
He further committed to thorough preparation for debates, emphasising that as Minority Leader his duty is to examine government actions closely and present opposing positions.
“I can promise you a well-researched dossier for all my debates. That I can promise you,” he added.
Even with this cooperative stance, Afenyo-Markin stressed that backing Agalga would not dilute the Minority’s political aim. His main task, he said, is to build up the Minority and eventually win majority control of Parliament.
“My job really, my job really is to turn this Minority into Majority. That really is my job,” he underscored.
He also warned Agalga against any moves to undermine or penetrate the Minority Caucus as the new Majority Leader begins his work.
Agalga took over the Majority Leadership after the National Democratic Congress (NDC) wrote to Speaker Alban Bagbin announcing leadership changes in the NDC Parliamentary Caucus.
The shift followed the nomination of former Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
