The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has confirmed receipt of three petitions concerning accusations of extortion and related behaviour levelled by Sammy Gyamfi, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), against Minority Leader in Parliament Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
The agency stated that it has obtained one joint petition from two individuals and two additional separate petitions from others, all connected to the same allegations.
In a statement released on Monday, 24 August, the OSP noted that it is aware of the public claims and will evaluate the matter to establish whether it falls under its legal mandate. Following that assessment, the office will decide if further investigative steps are required.
The development stems from Mr Gyamfi’s accusations that Mr Afenyo-Markin engaged in extortion. The Minority Leader has rejected the claims and signalled his intention to pursue legal action against the GoldBod CEO.
The dispute arises against the backdrop of a public disagreement between the two over alleged losses of GH¢22 billion (roughly US$1.7 billion) tied to the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme in 2025.
Separately, the United Party has submitted a petition to the Attorney-General and other anti-corruption and security bodies calling for an investigation into the extortion allegations against Mr Afenyo-Markin. The petition was lodged by the party’s Communications Director, Solomon Owusu, and Legal Director, Andrew Appiah-Danquah.
