We Want To Educate South Africans Through A Peaceful Demonstration – Ghana First Alliance Convener

The Convener and Leader of the Ghana First Alliance, an NGO and youth advocacy group, Nana Otu Darko, has called for a peaceful demonstration aimed at educating South Africans on the significant benefits their citizens enjoy in Ghana.

According to Nana Otu Darko, South African nationals living in Ghana are enjoying unrestricted movement, freely operating businesses in a conducive environment, and even playing key roles in managing the country’s major natural resources.

He therefore urged the Ghanaian government not to extend or renew the 20-year mining lease of the South African gold mining giant, Gold Fields, stating that Ghana now has capable citizens with the expertise and resources to manage these mines effectively.

Speaking on Gye Nyame FM’s Morning Show with host Kankam Boadu, Nana Otu Darko noted that Ghana and other African countries supported South Africans in their struggle for freedom from apartheid. However, he expressed concern that while South Africa has allowed its former colonial masters to continue dominating about 85% of its economy, it should appreciate the hospitality extended to its citizens abroad.

He added that in the past, Ghanaians lacked the financial capacity and technical equipment to manage the mines, but the situation has now changed significantly.

“Ghanaians have now demonstrated sufficient resources, skills, and strong financial backing to take full control of our natural resources. The government must therefore reconsider and have a rethink on this matter,” he emphasized.

The group plans to use the peaceful demonstration to highlight these issues and push for greater local participation in Ghana’s mining sector.
