Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo has instructed all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the region to immediately strengthen emergency response measures in the wake of severe flooding triggered by heavy downpours on Monday, June 29, 2026.
In an official statement, the Minister called on the MMDCEs to mobilize emergency response teams, personnel from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and other relevant technical experts. Their tasks include conducting rescue missions in impacted areas, evacuating people trapped by floodwaters when required, evaluating the scale of destruction, and delivering urgent support to those affected.
“The safety and welfare of all residents in the region is my topmost concern,” the Minister said. “I have therefore directed all MMDCEs to promptly enter their respective communities alongside emergency teams, NADMO officials, and technical personnel to step up rescue activities, evacuate individuals in danger where needed, conduct on-the-ground assessments, and offer immediate relief to victims.”
She added that every MMDCE must stay actively involved until the crisis is fully managed, stressing the need for strong leadership and rapid intervention at this critical time.
The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council is working closely with NADMO, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Police Service, and other emergency services to ensure a well-coordinated response.
Given forecasts from the Ghana Meteorological Agency predicting additional rainfall, the Minister advised residents to remain highly vigilant. She urged them to avoid non-essential travel, steer clear of low-lying flood-prone zones, open drains, and swiftly moving floodwaters.
She further appealed to parents and guardians to closely supervise children and prevent them from playing in floodwaters or trying to cross submerged roads and waterways.
Residents in need of urgent help were encouraged to reach out to NADMO via its designated emergency hotlines or WhatsApp service. The Minister also called on the public to fully support rescue workers and adhere to all safety instructions.
“Working hand in hand with our Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies as well as emergency agencies, we will keep working relentlessly to safeguard lives, support those impacted, and help our communities navigate this difficult situation,” she affirmed.
The Minister conveyed her condolences to all those affected by the flooding and reassured them of government support.
“My thoughts are with every individual and family impacted by this tragic event. I deeply sympathize with those who have experienced losses, displacement, or other difficulties. I want to assure every affected person that you are not alone — we are standing by you throughout this tough period,” she concluded.
