Deputy Attorney General Dr Justice Srem-Sai has stated that President John Dramani Mahama will neither protect nor obstruct the prosecution of any former government official found responsible in the AKSA Energy bribery case.
He emphasised that the government remains determined to let justice run its course, irrespective of the individual’s identity or political ties.
Speaking in an interview with Joy News on Monday, 17 August, the Deputy Attorney General called on Ghanaians to trust President Mahama and the administration to enforce accountability after the US conviction of Kweku Asante Berko, the former Goldman Sachs banker and one-time head of Tema Oil Refinery (TOR).
“There should be no uncertainty that any minister from the President’s earlier term who may be linked to the AKSA bribery would somehow be shielded, or that the President would intervene to protect them or suppress evidence. That is not the President I know,” he said.
“The person who appointed me I believe I understand what he is prepared to do and what he will not do. I have no such worries. I know the President. I work with him. And I am certain he will ensure the law is followed no matter who is involved.”
The AKSA Energy bribery matter has again drawn public attention in Ghana, especially following claims that payments were made to Ghanaian officials to secure approval for a power plant project.
Berko’s conviction has strengthened demands for probes into the Ghanaian side of the scheme and for those who may have received or enabled the payments to be identified and held to account.
Dr Srem-Sai sought to calm fears that political factors might stop the government from pursuing anyone connected to the scandal.
