Duncan Amoah, Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC), has again urged former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to explain his time in office. He insists that public trust in government requires former officials to face scrutiny, no matter their political party.
Speaking to the media on Saturday, 25 July, Amoah argued that citizens must carefully examine national budgets and demand accountability from those who controlled the country’s finances.
He cautioned that the unresolved issues linked to Ofori-Atta’s tenure risk becoming a political burden for the New Patriotic Party as it tries to return to power in the 2028 elections.
“If you are an NPP person, you should be worried anytime that this debacle continues to extend. Because, again, if you ask me to come 2028 to give you a mandate, are you bringing me a different finance minister or the same kind of crookish thing that was done?”
Amoah added that the former minister owes Ghanaians answers about the decisions made while he was in charge.
“The man should come and account to us. Look, he might be able to even help us find certain money that he didn’t pick, right? But under his stewardship, this is what you will see.”
He stressed that his remarks were driven by the principle of accountability, not party politics, and that every national budget deserves public examination.
The comments come while Ofori-Atta is still in the United States and faces alleged corruption-related cases brought by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP). The OSP has filed several corruption and related charges against him and, working with the Attorney General, is seeking his extradition to Ghana. The investigations cover matters such as the Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML) contracts and the National Cathedral project, among others.
At the same time, a US court has granted him permanent residency, stating that the OSP had not proven any wrongdoing by the former finance minister.
