Mrs. Kumi Bernice, secretary of the Egg Sellers Association of Ghana and national organiser for Women in the Poultry Value Chain, says egg selling is a lucrative and profitable venture that can raise living standards.
She left banking for the egg trade and said the move has improved her life more than her previous career. The business is profitable but demands discipline, commitment and a businesslike approach to succeed, she said.
Bernice advised aspiring entrepreneurs to avoid impulse purchases and unnecessary spending while investing carefully. She also stressed the need for a trustworthy partner, especially for those running the business with others.
The egg trade has significantly improved livelihoods in Dormaa and among association members, she said, encouraging others to consider it for a better standard of living.
Separately, Mr. George Kwame Twum, known as Mr. Blue and chairman of the Dormaa Ahenkro Egg Drivers Association, cited challenges facing egg drivers. He pointed to high breakage rates during transport from Dormaa Ahenkro to Accra, blaming numerous speed ramps along the route. Some sellers also load already-broken eggs from farms, he said.
Loading difficulties often force drivers to hire extra help, raising costs and hurting finances, Twum said. He urged the government to repair poor roads to ease egg transport and cut losses.
Twum also alleged that some police officers demand eggs from drivers, calling the practice another operational burden. He appealed for an end to it so drivers can work without unnecessary obstacles.
