Former Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has voiced strong frustration about the long-standing delay in fully activating the Afari Military Hospital in the Ashanti Region, calling it a wasted chance to boost healthcare services across Ghana.
Agyapong made the remarks on Tuesday, June 16, shortly after handing over a pickup truck and 15 motorcycles to the Ghana Police Service at the Accra Regional Police Headquarters. The outspoken former NPP presidential aspirant did not spare any administration from criticism including the NPP government in which he served as Chairman of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee.
He stressed that the hospital, intended to serve both military personnel and civilians, should have been completed and running many years ago considering the resources already invested in it.
Recounting the project’s timeline, Agyapong noted that the foundation was laid under former President John Agyekum Kufuor. Construction advanced significantly during the subsequent National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration. However, when the NPP returned to power and inherited the project, the party failed to finish and operationalise it during its eight-year term.
“I am telling you the gospel truth,” he said. “This hospital was started by President John Agyekum Kufuor. The NDC came and worked on it, and when we (NPP) came in, as Chairman of Defence and Interior, we did nothing about it. When we tried to visit Afari for an inspection, they prevented us. Someone claimed the hospital has only been there for 15 months, but we were in power for eight years and still didn’t complete it.”
