Lack of Official Backing Puts Poultry Sector at Risk in Dormaa, Says Farmers’ Leader
Mr. Paul Akrasi, Chairman of the Poultry Farmers Association in Dormaa Ahenkro, has warned that the local poultry sector is shrinking because farmers receive too little help to grow their operations.
He recalled that the industry once expanded strongly in the area, but rising production expenses have since made it hard for farmers to keep going. High input prices have forced many to cut the number of birds they raise, slowing the sector’s overall progress.
Mr. Akrasi also pointed to two further problems: few young people are willing to work on poultry farms, and government support especially affordable loans from financial institutions remains scarce. Together these factors have deepened the industry’s decline in Dormaa Ahenkro.
He therefore urged stronger government assistance, particularly low-interest loans. He also called for poultry processing facilities that would encourage more broiler production and cut dependence on imported frozen chicken.
In addition, he stressed the value of egg-powder machines that could turn excess eggs into powder during periods of oversupply, helping farmers preserve value, expand their businesses, and revive the local industry.
