Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has instructed the maintenance of newly procured Metro Mass Transit (MMT) buses to ensure its durability and efficient service delivery across the length and breath of the country.
She gave the directive at the inauguration of the new fleet of buses, which are expected to expand public transport services and ease commuter pressure, particularly during peak hours in urban centres.
The acquisition forms part of the government’s pledge made in January 2026, following a period of severe shortage of commercial vehicles that affected transportation across major cities.
The Vice President urged MMT drivers to demonstrate a high level of professionalism in the operation of the buses, stressing that responsible handling of the fleet is key to ensuring passenger safety and sustained service delivery.
She also assured that all the buses have been fully insured, licensed and cleared for immediate deployment to various urban centres to improve mobility and reduce transport challenges.
“When our transport system is efficient, people, goods and services move as they should. That is why enhancing public transport is central to our economy. We aim to decrease dependence on unreliable, unsafe and overly expensive transport options,” she said.
The Vice President further expressed optimism that the planned procurement of an additional 200 buses would deepen local participation by creating opportunities for Ghanaian engineers and technicians in the assembly and manufacturing of vehicle components.
