The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has barred tricycle riders, commonly called “Aboboyaa,” from travelling in the inner lanes of roads across Accra.
The measure aims to boost road safety and cut down on crashes involving these vehicles.
Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey told journalists that operators should stick to any available side roads. Where none exist, they must remain in the outermost lane and equip their tricycles with reflectors.
He further instructed riders to put on reflective clothing so they can be seen more easily, especially after dark.
Operators have until the end of August 2026 to fit reflector stickers to their vehicles. Those who ignore the rule will face penalties.
“If there are highways and there’s a side road, they must always use the side road. If there are no side roads, they must drive the outer lane, with reflectors on,” the Mayor stated.
He called on riders to meet the new standards ahead of enforcement, emphasising that the rules are meant to lower accident risks and protect everyone using the roads.
